More than anything else, I practice presence with you and help you develop presence with yourself. For nearly 20 years, I have practiced mindfulness and presence through meditation. It takes me out of the mental experience I can mistake for my life and puts me in direct contact with my actual life. As a result, I have let go of most of my own mental experience of depression and anxiety. I love helping others do the same. I bring over 58 years of highly varied life experience, including hospice work, serving as a home health aide, delivering papers, downloading satellite telemetry, writing legal arguments, baking bread, selling books, and teaching college German. I have experienced a lot in my lifetime, including coming out as gay, and can relate to all kinds of problems and experiences.
Therapy is above all an emotionally intimate human relationship. I meet you as my real self, with my real feelings, reactions and life experience. In this relationship, you can see your situation and your self in a new light. I look beneath the surface, and help you do the same, so you can see new aspects of yourself within your world, and available choices that you may have always overlooked. I help you develop mindful contact with your real life, rather than the mental experience of suffering that we all mistake for our real lives. Making this shift brings true relief! You can have more joy, power and agency. Finding your way back after you get lost can happen faster. The goal is not simply intense emotional experiences, unloading, or catharsis (though those may happen), but concrete changes that improve your life.
The hardest realities of all call for realism, groundedness and compassionate support. I am trained in hospice work and bereavement counseling. Wanting to help people with death led me into this field in the first place.
Life always involves suffering, and some lives contain more than their share. I can help you discover ways to invest your limited energy that truly serve you, and help you let go of the wasted mental efforts that just make it worse.
I can help you navigate your gender transition challenges, provide an HRT or surgery letter, or just be a therapist you don't have to explain or defend yourself to. I'm Gay. LBQQI all welcome!
